Max Higbee Center Max Higbee Center's Member of the Month
March’s member of the month goes to one of our regular Daytime attendees, Kyle Jackson! Right before our interview with Kyle, before he even knew he was member of the month, he was telling us, “I love this place, this place is awesome!” Well, the feeling is mutual! Kyle is a big team player here at the center and is always trying to help other members during programs. He makes sure everyone feels included and takes part in the activities. Some of his favorite things to do during program are going on walks, hanging out with his friends, and keeping an eye out for Ryan Stiles heading to the Upfront Theatre—boy it’s a big day when there is a celebrity sighting! Outside of program, Kyle loves going quadding with his family. When asked to explain, Kyle said, “You turn the key on, press the green button, back it up, and then you just go! You can go crazy driving them anywhere!” We are so happy to have Kyle here at MHC. Thank you for being so supportive to your friends and consistently having a positive attitude!
Nick is one of our newest members here at MHC, however Nick used to come here back when it was Marianne’s House! He has been attending Daytime program and we love having him around. Nick is known for his sense of humor; he mentioned, “I like laughing with Shae at Day Program; it’s been cool to meet new friends”. Nick enjoys playing with legos because they all go together, and something new he has tried recently was painting. We have noticed that Nick is very open to trying to new things like painting, and we are so glad he feels comfortable doing so with the support of his friends here at Max Higbee Center. When Nick first started coming to MHC, we learned something really interesting and unique about him. He loves letter writing and receiving letters! Nick has been very helpful whenever we write thank you cards to people. Congratulations, Nick, on being February’s Member of the Month!
Ryan has been coming to programs for about 7 years now and has shown some incredible growth! We are so impressed with Ryan recently because of his dedication to getting fit and healthy. He told us about his mom encouraging and supporting him to exercise more and eat healthier. Ryan has joined Weight Watchers and has become very conscious of his diet. He has also started walking and sometimes boxes with his dad! When asked how he chooses to stay healthy he responded, "Not eat so much candy and eat more fruits and vegetables!" He received a Fit Bit and boxing gloves for Christmas and is so excited about using his new toys that encourage a healthy lifestyle. We asked Ryan if he has any goal in the near future and he mentioned he wanted to participate in MHC's Zombies Have Hearts, Too! 5k. His goal is to run the entire race! Congratulations on being Max Higbee's Member of the Month, Ryan. Keep working hard!
November’s member of the month has been truly excelling not only in programs, but in life! Tim is a regular here at MHC, being one of a few members that attends every program. When asked which program was his favorite he responded with, “Can I choose all of them?” Although he is open to anything, it’s very evident that he loves exercising and participating in fitness activities. He attends 365 program regularly and always comes prepared for the activity and ready to help if needed. Tim has also shown interest in volunteering here at MHC and we think he would do so well in this role! He can be found encouraging his friends, assisting staff, listening to country music, and always having a good time. This month has been extra exciting for Tim as he has recently gotten hired at Target. This is a great fit for him as he is such a friendly and hard-working guy. We are so happy for you, Tim, and know you will be very successful at your new job! Congratulations on your big accomplishment!
Eric is a regular here at our CAP Program. He said he started coming to Max Higbee Center when he was 21 years old, which means he's been hanging out with us for 13 years! His smile is infectious, his movie knowledge is incredible, and his attendance is impeccable. Eric's favorite activity to do at MHC, other than "hangin' out" is mall walking, but some might argue his second favorite is Cooking at the Co-Op because he gets to bring a few movie choices for us to watch! Some of Eric's favorite movies are Planes: Fire & Rescue, Brave, and most of all Free Willy. Eric loves Disney movies and has gone to Disney Land more than we can count! We chose Eric especially for this month because we know how much he loves Halloween. On the first day of October this year, Eric wore a costume and when asked why he was all dressed up he said, "Testing it out". Wondering what his get up was? Disney themed of course! Eric plans on being Woody this Halloween and we can't wait see the costume in full swing. Congratulations, Eric, we are so grateful for your constant presence here at Max Higbee Center!
Lisa has been a regular at the Weekend Drop-In Program for a while now, and we are so grateful for her consistent presence and helpful nature! She loves being able to socialize with her friends here, because during the rest of the week Lisa can be found working hard at her multiple jobs and helping her mom around the house. One of her favorite jobs is working at a pastry shop in Ferndale. Whenever Lisa is at the MHC, she always has positive attitude and has been becoming more and more excited about going on outings. Some of her favorite activities at Max Higbee are crafting and bingo, but while she's away, Lisa loves shopping with her sister; she is always so stylish when she comes to program! One thing Lisa is looking forward to in the next few days is heading to Chicago to visit her dad. We hope she has so much fun, and can't wait to here about it when you get back! Thanks, Lisa, for being so helpful and positive!
Dana has been a member at MHC since June and boy, are we glad he’s here! On any given day, Dana will be seen smiling and making others laugh and have a good time. Dana was really able to shine last month during drumming with Gayland when he blew us away with his drum solo. He has been playing drums for 5 years and said, “When a drummer starts to play, I get immediately happy”. He spoke of drumming as an inspiration and a passion of his, and it really showed when he let loose and did his drum solo for us. Dana has a history of being exemplary as he was voted “Most Inspirational Student” at Squalicum High, was the class speaker at graduation, and went on a mission trip to help build a house and feed homeless. We are amazed by his helpfulness and he'll usually be found in the garden pulling weeds and watering on garden days! When asked what he likes about Max Higbee Center, he responded with getting to know members and staff, and being able to explore his creative/artistic side. We are grateful for Dana’s enthusiasm for life and look forward to learning even more about him later on!
Adelle has been coming to the Max Higbee Center for many years, and has always had impeccable attendance at the CAP program. July is a special month here at MHC because we have been celebrating our first annual team work month! Adelle has impressed the staff all month with her teamwork mantality and MHC spirit! On most days, Adelle can be found lending a helping hand to others in need during program and spending time making sure everything is running smoothly. She even assists the staff on a regular basis by assuring that the groups are sticking together and staying safe, while also making sure our backpacks are zipped and cupboards are shut! This summer, Adelle tried a new hobby. She took horse riding lessons and, while apprehensive at first, she soon began to love riding and was sad that her lessons were coming to an end. She said, "I like riding because it gives me control". We see that here at Max Higbee Center as she feels the need to control her peers' surroundings so they are able to succeed.. We have appreciated her presence at CAP and would be lost without her!
Alex is one of our newer members here at MHC, and is someone who has shown tremendous growth as an individual. At first we thought Alex was a quiet and shy person, but boy were we wrong! Alex is a bright and energetic addition to our center and it has been great getting to know him. When we asked what his favorite activites are at programs Alex shared "I like when we go to the RE store." Alex is our center Mr fix it! When something is broken Alex always takes the time to volunteer to help. He has helped us with our toilet and vacuume. When we were last at the RE store, an employee said to Alex "I think you know more about toilets then I do!" Alex has shown growth in his leadership as well. At drumming program with Gayland, Alex can now stand up in front of the group and take charge of a rhythm. We all look forward to learning more about our new friend and are so proud of all of his achievments thus far!
Eric is a long time member here at Max Higbee Center. He is an avid attendee of the CAP program and hardly ever misses a day! Eric is quite the musician, and has a wonderful singing voice .When asked what his favorite song to sing was he said "Johnny Cash, the Ring of Fire." Eric has been playing the piano since he was a little boy and has weekly lessons. Eric really knows how to cut loose on the stage and sing his favorite songs to his friends when he is at Out of the Ashes. Eric prefers activities that get him active in the community and outside. Some of the things he loves to do at CAP are walking to parks, playing frisbee, and hiking.
