January Member of the Month goes to a total rock star! Hannah is a frequenter of our Community Access Program. Over the last six months, Hannah has been very focused on her health and fitness. She has been participating in our Recreation Mentor Program with the goal of becoming healthier. She and her mentor, Jordan, hit the mall or a trail every weekend to walk and get some exercise. Hannah is excited about walking in Max Higbee Center’s Hearty Party! 5k. Hannah mentioned to us, “I told myself, you know what, I want to get healthy and I'm training for the 5k by walking with my recreation mentor. I'm excited for the 5k because I have not done it for a long time. I'm finally feeling healthy enough to do it again!" Way to go, Hannah! Max Higbee Center is so proud of you for reaching your goals!
December’s Member of the Month goes to Susie Evatt! We are so happy to have Susie around in our CAP program. Whenever she comes, she tells us how much she misses her friends when she’s not here. A few of her favorite things to do at MHC are Cooking at the Co-Op and going to the library. Susie loves taking recipes that she learns here and trying them at home. One of her all-time favorites that we made a long time ago is broccoli tots! Susie also loves reading, and when asked why she likes the library so much she replied, “I love all the interesting words in the library.” Susie is also known for her love of all things musical—like SPIN Dances and Out of the Ashes to name a few! You will see her singing “An Old Fashioned Love Song” every week at OOTA. Humor is also one of Susie’s specialties. Her recent joke had us in stitches: How do you wake up Lady Gaga? You poke-her-face! Congratulations, Susie—you are awesome!
Linnea is one of our newer members here at MHC! She moved from Florida, but we learned she is originally from Texas. Although she misses the sunshine down south, she has been enjoying her new home. Linnea really enjoys attending our cooking classes and any day that involves books. Whether it’s heading to the Bellingham Public Library or hitting up one of our local book stores, you can bet Linnea will be there. She recently learned how to make French Onion Soup at MHC, and hopes to eventually learn how to cook burgers, steaks, and salads. Recently, Linnea has taken the lead on organizing Max Higbee Center’s participation in becoming a drop site for the Toys for Tots Drive. When asked why she was interested in this, she replied, “I want to give back as much as I can this year.” Linnea has also spent time this year volunteering at animal shelters. She has assisted by walking and bathing dogs, as well as raising awareness and gathering donations! Congratulations, Linnea, and keep up the amazing work!
This month we would like to recognize Paul Kerman as our Member of the Month! Paul is an avid attendee of our DayTime Program and always keeps us on our toes with his humor and positive attitude. A few of Paul’s favorite things to do at MHC is going for walks and bowling. He also loves biking, camping, and swimming, which we learned about on MHC’s annual Camp Out in August. Paul is known for his sense of humor. During this interview Paul spent most of the time chuckling under his breath at the very idea of being Member of the Month. He told us he is very excited for Thanksgiving because he enjoys spending time with family and eating cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Congratulations, Paul! Thank you for being so positive in programs.
Jason has been a member at MHC since September 2015. It’s been so wonderful to have him around this last year and watch him grow! An example of this growth is watching him at Out of the Ashes. Previously, Jason would stay towards the back and play pool; we slowly watched him inch his way towards the stage, grabbing a tambourine, and now he’s on stage jamming out with the rest of the band! Jason can be characterized by his contagious laughter, big smile, and helpful attitude. Whether it is setting up tables at the ELC or taking out the garbage at MHC, Jason can always be counted on to go the extra mile and help out. Jason is an avid Seahawks fan and is seen sporting their logo year round—September has been a pretty exciting month for him with the start of the football season! Congratulations Jason!
August Member of the Month goes to Terri Dougan! This gal is a regular attendee of our 365 Fitness Program and always comes in ready to have fun and exercise! A few things Terri enjoys: tennis, the color orange, dance parties, and flying kites—all things she gets to do while working out with her friends here at MHC. Some goals that Terri has been working on recently are quickening her walking pace, increasing flexibility, and participation in all activities. We appreciate Terri’s positive attitude and ability to celebrate and be proud of her accomplishments with sayings like “Terri did it!” and “Good job, girl!” So, good job on being member of the month, Terri, you did it!
Melissa has recently become more of a regular at programs and we are so happy to have her around! She told us, “I like coming to Max Higbee Center more often!” We noticed what an active community member Melissa has become this summer, both with MHC and independently attending various community events. One of her favorites this summer has been going to the concert series in Elizabeth Park every Thursday to dance and hang out with friends. Melissa is always having a good time and will try anything and everything during programs. One of her favorite activities is drumming with Gayland and she mentioned, “I’d like to ride bikes more!” It’s obvious she enjoys being outside and staying active. Melissa has such a bright personality that has been shining all summer long!
Our Member of the Month for June goes to a well deserving individual with a heart of gold, Jim Prendergast! Jim said he started coming to Max Higbee Center in the 80’s and we love that he still finds joy and friendship at MHC to this day. With the start of summer, Jim has been incredibly helpful in the garden. He has so much knowledge and has become our go-to guru when we have questions about MHC’s community garden on Lakeway. Jim mentioned, “Gardening makes me feel good; it’s good for the heart and good for the spirit. I hope to teach people how to garden.” He loves tending to and harvesting his raspberry and blueberry bushes at home, and always offers help to weed the community garden. Some other things Jim enjoys is busting a move at Out of the Ashes and riding bikes. Congratulations, Jim, and thank you for all of your help!
This month we would like to recognize an avid Weekend Program attendee and all around wonderful human being, Donna Estomo! She told us she has been coming to program for about 3 years now. Donna excels at always having a positive attitude and trying new things at the center. Some of her favorite activities are making jewelry, pottery, and cooking at the Co-op! This month at cooking, Donna really enjoyed making sandwiches; she said her sandwich consisted of cheese and avocado on white bread. Some other things we learned about Donna during our interview with her was that she enjoys listening to classical music. Donna told us, “I like MHC because I can get out of the house and hang out with my friends.”
Our member of the month for April is Mr. Loren Hubbard! What a great guy to have around here at the center! One of Loren’s favorite activities at MHC is going to Out of the Ashes. We see him every Tuesday dancing and having a great time while we jam out to OOTA! “Come Together” is one of Loren’s favorite songs they play, which is incredibly fitting. Loren can be found chatting with all of his friends at the center, and he exudes positivity and friendship. He has also been talking a lot about how excited he is for this nice weather because then he can ride his adaptive bike! Loren has a bike that allows him to pedal with his arms—what a workout! We asked Loren if he had some safety tips for bike riders, and he said, “Always wear a helmet, be safe, and keep your eyes on the road!” We later found out that Loren has a super cool Spider Man helmet to wear when he rides. He is looking forward to biking to Civic Field for the Adaptive Cycle Expo on May 14th, maybe he’ll see you there!
