Max Higbee Center Max Higbee Center's Member of the Month
Our July Member of the Month is Noah Luckmann! Noah participates in the rec mentoring program, where every week he furthers his fitness goals! Noah often goes for lengthy walks and practices soccer, but he really likes riding the adaptive bike! Noah flies down the trail, working his muscles as he observes nature’s wonders around him. He comments on many things he notices, especially animals. Noah loves animals! Which means his work schedule is perfectly tailored to him. Twice a week Noah works as a dog walker, walking Django on Mondays and Ziggy on Wednesdays. Lucky dogs! Well, lucky horses, too, because on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, Noah works at Pediatric NDT and SI Therapy Services, a horse ranch out in Lynden. On Wednesdays Noah makes the soft transition from ranch life to farm life, and goes to work the land at Bellingham Country Gardens. Up until very recently, Noah was also able to volunteer at Animals as Natural Therapy Windy Acres Farm, though sadly that volunteering opportunity has ended. In the seemingly miniscule moments that he has free time, Noah’s number one hobby is video collecting (specifically VHS tapes! Nothing else will do!). He also likes thrift shops and music stores, along with just spending quality time at home, or playing with his family and caregivers. Noah is a very funny, enthusiastic, and super great person! Congratulations, Noah, on being the Member of the Month. Now feel free to take a little break. You’ve earned it!
Our May Member of the Month is Tak Taubel! Tak has been coming to CAP when his very busy schedule allows. He is currently a student in the Community Transitions program in Bellingham, and he loves it! Tak just finished up the soccer season, and with summer practically upon us, Tak pointed out, “I like swimming.” Almost time to hit the beach, Tak! As if his weekdays weren't busy enough, on Sundays Tak likes going to youth group at his church. Tak said he likes reading the books we have at the Max Higbee Center, and he definitely likes music, stating that he especially likes the guitar, drums, and the piano. When he gets hungry from running himself practically ragged, Tak really likes going out to eat. He said his favorite food is hot dogs, though his mother seemed skeptical, so he agreed that his favorite food is noodles! And onions, apparently! What an underrated vegetable! Tak also likes watching movies, talking sports, and loves haircuts! But Tak really seems to know his superheroes! When asked who his favorite superhero is, he responded, “Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Captain America…,” though he's also discussed Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Spiderman, and agreed that Wonder Woman is cool. Tak is a very polite person, and says “please” a lot around here. Well, thank you, Tak! And congratulations!
Walk in to the Max Higbee Center on any given Friday or Saturday night and you'll encounter Mr. Darren Osborne. You will most likely hear his warm salutations over any conversation from any point in the room. For the month of May, MHC has the distinguished honor of recognizing long-standing member Darin Osborne with the designation of April Member of the Month. We thank you for the sincerity of your personality, we thank you for your kind, humorous nature and we thank you for what you freely give of yourself to our community.
Darin, here's looking forward to the next time "I'm here."
March Member of the Month goes to the one and only.... Phineas Ripper! Phin is one of our newer members here at Max Higbee Center and we couldn't be more excited to have him around! He is helpful, funny, and everyone's friend! Phin is an avid Weekend Program attendee and loves to try new things. Though he likes all the fun things we do at program, when asked what his all-time favorite activities are he said "Martial Arts and cooking at the Co-Op. My Favorite thing we have made is Pizza Cupcakes." Yum! When he is not at Max Higbee, he is busy being a student at Whatcom Middle School. We learned recently that Phin likes MHC so much he talks about it with his friends at school on the regular! During the summer, Phin is a mentor at FACES northwest, which is the perfect role for him because he is such a great helper. Congrats, Phin! You rock!
February's Member of the Month goes to Teri Smith! It has been so great getting know this gal during our Community Access Program. She is known for her humor as she is always making jokes and laughing with us. My goodness, her laugh is contagious! Teri is also deaf, and it is such a treat when she teaches us different signs. She has expanded our skills in communication through gesture, humor and patience, and we are so appreciative of her! Teri loves greeting everyone and everything, stopping to smell the flowers, and taking in the Bellingham scenery. It's easy to tell when she appreciates something because she will smile and nod in approval. Two things that she definitely appreciates is being at home and being at the Max Higbee Center. When she takes off at the end of the day, she always makes sure to let us know when she will be back again. Thank you for being so thoughtful, Teri, we hope you always keep coming back!
January Member of the Month goes to a total rock star! Hannah is a frequenter of our Community Access Program. Over the last six months, Hannah has been very focused on her health and fitness. She has been participating in our Recreation Mentor Program with the goal of becoming healthier. She and her mentor, Jordan, hit the mall or a trail every weekend to walk and get some exercise. Hannah is excited about walking in Max Higbee Center’s Hearty Party! 5k. Hannah mentioned to us, “I told myself, you know what, I want to get healthy and I'm training for the 5k by walking with my recreation mentor. I'm excited for the 5k because I have not done it for a long time. I'm finally feeling healthy enough to do it again!" Way to go, Hannah! Max Higbee Center is so proud of you for reaching your goals!
December’s Member of the Month goes to Susie Evatt! We are so happy to have Susie around in our CAP program. Whenever she comes, she tells us how much she misses her friends when she’s not here. A few of her favorite things to do at MHC are Cooking at the Co-Op and going to the library. Susie loves taking recipes that she learns here and trying them at home. One of her all-time favorites that we made a long time ago is broccoli tots! Susie also loves reading, and when asked why she likes the library so much she replied, “I love all the interesting words in the library.” Susie is also known for her love of all things musical—like SPIN Dances and Out of the Ashes to name a few! You will see her singing “An Old Fashioned Love Song” every week at OOTA. Humor is also one of Susie’s specialties. Her recent joke had us in stitches: How do you wake up Lady Gaga? You poke-her-face! Congratulations, Susie—you are awesome!
Linnea is one of our newer members here at MHC! She moved from Florida, but we learned she is originally from Texas. Although she misses the sunshine down south, she has been enjoying her new home. Linnea really enjoys attending our cooking classes and any day that involves books. Whether it’s heading to the Bellingham Public Library or hitting up one of our local book stores, you can bet Linnea will be there. She recently learned how to make French Onion Soup at MHC, and hopes to eventually learn how to cook burgers, steaks, and salads. Recently, Linnea has taken the lead on organizing Max Higbee Center’s participation in becoming a drop site for the Toys for Tots Drive. When asked why she was interested in this, she replied, “I want to give back as much as I can this year.” Linnea has also spent time this year volunteering at animal shelters. She has assisted by walking and bathing dogs, as well as raising awareness and gathering donations! Congratulations, Linnea, and keep up the amazing work!
This month we would like to recognize Paul Kerman as our Member of the Month! Paul is an avid attendee of our DayTime Program and always keeps us on our toes with his humor and positive attitude. A few of Paul’s favorite things to do at MHC is going for walks and bowling. He also loves biking, camping, and swimming, which we learned about on MHC’s annual Camp Out in August. Paul is known for his sense of humor. During this interview Paul spent most of the time chuckling under his breath at the very idea of being Member of the Month. He told us he is very excited for Thanksgiving because he enjoys spending time with family and eating cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Congratulations, Paul! Thank you for being so positive in programs.
Jason has been a member at MHC since September 2015. It’s been so wonderful to have him around this last year and watch him grow! An example of this growth is watching him at Out of the Ashes. Previously, Jason would stay towards the back and play pool; we slowly watched him inch his way towards the stage, grabbing a tambourine, and now he’s on stage jamming out with the rest of the band! Jason can be characterized by his contagious laughter, big smile, and helpful attitude. Whether it is setting up tables at the ELC or taking out the garbage at MHC, Jason can always be counted on to go the extra mile and help out. Jason is an avid Seahawks fan and is seen sporting their logo year round—September has been a pretty exciting month for him with the start of the football season! Congratulations Jason!
