Today we ate tacos. We made them too! We all decided together to have avocados, ground turkey, black beans, salsa, Greek yogurt, and our homegrown jalapeños in our tacos. This required a lot of chopping, frying, and general food preparation on our parts. "The jalapeños turned orange! They tasted good!", said Jalapeño Superstar. And this is a true statement! Our jalapeños ripened to turn a little bit orange. We learned that this causes them to taste a little sweeter. Overall, we had a fun day! We hope you had one too 😊
Today we did our monthly yoga class with Sarah at the YMCA! We did many yoga poses then got a chance to each lead a yoga pose ourselves. After that Sarah had a new activity for us, in which we made a giant mandala out of construction paper on the floor! It was a very relaxing day. "I like it. I like yoga class," said Superhero Jalapeño. "It's important to be quiet at yoga," added Shrek. Great point. Thanks, Sarah, for another great class!
Today we had planned to go out to the Lakeway Garden, BUT, as Jalapeño Dragon Superhero pointed out, "It's smoky." That's right Jalapeño Dragon Superhero, it sure is. So with an air quality alert still in effect, we decided to avoid sitting outside for too long. Instead, we made the quick walk up to the Co-op and bought some thyme for our indoor garden. Because of the air quality alert, some of us got talking about the weather, which led to some science experiments. "We experimented on wind and we experimented on clouds," shared Fishboy, who was a great assistant and helped explain scientific principles to his friends. And since we couldn't go out to there, we chose to make some garden gnomes to add to our garden as soon as the air clears up! "I put a beard, a hat, and a nose (on my garden gnome)," said Shrek. Next we learned a little folklore about gnome culture. We had a nice quiet day learning about science and magic. Now hopefully the air quality improves soon!
Today, we fought our way through the smoke to get to the YMCA for our monthly fitness tests with Mary! "It's fun," said Jalapeño Superhero. We began the day by picking a Muscle of the Month. For September we picked Lats! (Or latimuss Dorsi muscles). We warmed up by working our lats on the exercise balls! Then after lunch we walked up to the Y. Everyone completed our fitness tests, which included things like push-ups, sit-ups, and jumping jacks. "I did 25 push-ups," said Meat. Well done, Meat, no pun intended. "I did 12 push-ups," said Mario, who is just being modest, since the writer of this blog post is pretty sure he did more. "Stretch!" Dirty D reminded us all. Good idea, Dirty D!
Today we split up into two groups for bowling! Some people went to 20th Century Bowl! The other group went down to Maritime Heritage Park and bowled on the lawn! The bowling alley group played some really close games. Our scores were all pretty similar! The lawn group had fun playing bocce in the sun! "I got to throw the ball," said Mr. Throws A Lot. "I did it with power," said Superhero Jalapeño, referring to how he rolled the bowling ball. "Bowling with friends is pretty awesome," added Pink Wolf Girl, summing things up well. Roll on!
Today we made trail mix at the Max Higbee Center! What do you put in your trail mix? We bought our ingredients at the Co-op then mixed them together after our regularly-scheduled lunch. We had peanuts, sunflower seeds chocolate chips coconut flakes raisins and off brand M & M's. We also made candied nuts on our camping stove. "Well, you can put more and different stuff in your own trail mix," said Leonardo. Good point. "We had fun doing that activity," said Mr Apple. "Making the trail mix was my favorite part," added Danckng Jalapeño. Hopefully that goes for everyone. Along with the eating part.
Today we warmed up by stretching out our bodies and then we went up to the YMCA to do our monthly fitness tests with our good friend Mary. "It was fun," said Leo. Puzzlemaster shared that his favorite part of the day was the stretching. "I like seeing Maryyyyyyyyy!" added The Dancing Jalapeño. "We were working out," said Mr. Coffee. We sure were.
Today for Healthy Lifestyles we warmed up with a special superhero workout! It included exercises like Bateman punches, Superman sprints, Spider-Man squats, and Wonder Woman lassoing! After lunch we went up to have yoga class at the YMCA with our friend Sarah! " I like doing downward dog pose," said Mr. Anderton. Batman added, "I like the outside workout first, and I like yoga so much." "I like surfing," said Surfer Guy, pointing out one of the yoga poses. What started as an action-packed day ended as a very relaxing one.
Today we walked to Elizabeth Park to play tennis! And badminton! We had a nice long walk to get there then had a picnic in the shade. Then we got down to business and started getting some good rallies going. "What a workout," said Traveling Tennis Girl. "It's fun," pointed out Jalapeño Superhero. "It went by really fast because I was having so much fun," added Kurtapiller. "I got a sticker!" said first time member Softball Guy, which meant he reached his daily goal. We're ready for Wimbledon!
Today in Healthy Lifestyles, we cooked healthy s'mores right here at the Max Higbee Center! What made our s'mores healthy you ask? "Bananas and dark chocolate," said Mr. Wonder. That's right, instead of marshmallows we used bananas and instead of milk chocolate we used dark chocolate. "I cut the bananas," said Shrek. So did several other members. "It was different but good," said Ms. Powerful. I think most people agreed. We learned about safely using a grill, but due to the wind we cooked our s'mores on a camping stove instead. "I liked them," Jalapeño Dragon. Glad to hear it!
