Today we braved the rain and wind and flooded streets of Bellingham for a very exciting tour of the Bellingham Food Bank!
Members were shocked by how much food there was! Boxes on boxes on boxes on pallets. We found out they serve 200,000 people annually, a number that has grown every year since they were established 45 years ago! Wow!
Bagel Lady mentioned that "The Bagelry donates to the Food Bank!" Many local grocery stores, farms and Bakeries donate food.
During our tour we saw so many volunteers sorting food! The building was so big, they even store food for over 10 Food Banks! During the upstairs portion of our tour we learned that forklifts are used to move large containers off food to their upstairs storage area. Members asked what all the extra bins were for, and learned that the annual nationwide Letter Carriers 'Stamp Out Hunger' Food Drive brings in around 150 pallets of food!
Dancing Jalepeno said "I want to volunteer there!" We found out the Food Bank welcomes groups of volunteers and we hope to get a Max Higbee group there to volunteer soon!
Thank You SO much to the Food Bank for the educational tour!
Today, we were lucky to have sunshine and fresh air to play in! We split into 3 groups and did a fitness Scavenger Hunt. What is a Fitness Scavenger Hunt you may ask? Each group was tasked with finding places around town, such as open spaces, bridges, stairs, water fountains etc. and were then given exercises to complete.
One group went to Boulevard Park and did jumping jacks, pushups, sang Disney Karaoke, and took in the beautiful views.
Another group walked to Waypoint Park and practiced high kicks, ran to the top of the stairs at Maritime Heritage Park, and even did some yoga stretches by the bay!
"We did jumping jacks on top of the stairs, for instance." said one member.
"We walked down by the bridge" exclaimed TwoLincolnOne.
We also discussed the importance of cardiovascular health and why it's great to get your heart pumping! Some of the exercises we did helped prepare our bodies for winter, building up stabilizing muscles to prevent slips and falls.
We ended the day with discussion about our difference in ages and abilities, which led to a fitting quote to sum up our day.
"Every day, you have 100% of your life left."
Today was Geocaching day! Geocaching is a great way to get outside and explore. We beat the rain (mostly) and appreciated the peeks at blue skies through the clouds.
One group took the bus to Cornwall Park. "It was good exercising, I got my steps!" reported Dancing Queen . James commented "I had a good time." They were super sleuths searching many bushes before uncovering their Geocache.
Another group made the long trek to Squalicum Park, exploring many beautiful gardens and intetesting plants and animals. "We had fun finding it in the bushes, I found it, it was on the ground!" said Tim Tebow. Game Master exclaimed "It was a long looong walk!"
For a few members this was their first Geocaching experience. "It was a cool walk to get to the Geocache with lots of cool plant life. That was better than just finding the Geocache" said Good Spirit.
"I like it!" finished Party Jalepeno.
Our Nutrition Education Program facilitates cooking classes, activities with our community garden plot, and nutritional workshops during all of our regular programs.
Today for Healthy Lifestyles we made Spinach Basil Pesto! While one group went to the Co-Op to gather ingredients, the rest of us harvested Basil from our very own herb garden.
Our first step was to prepare the garlic, which we were able to adapt to include all abilities. You might see folks 'squish' the garlic cloves with the side of the knife blade before. We use dishes with a flat bottom, such as a pie pan or cup to allow for both hands to safely hold the item while crushing the garlic.
We also learned how to juice lemons! Did you know that if you roll them on the table you can encourage the juice to pool at the center? We then cut them lemons and were able to easily squeeze out the juice! No juicer needed!!
Adding Spinach to the pesto allowed us to make a higher volume, as well as adding some nutrients. Members noticed how the pesto was extra green with all the spinach added in.
We also had a friendly tip that we could add cream cheese to the recipe which smoothed out the pesto to a creamy consistency. Yum!
"It was yummy!" declared Butterfly Lady Pink
Zooch excitedlty exclaimed that "The pesto was the besto!"
"It sure was good" 2LincolnOne said.
It's safe to say that this recipe was a hit!
Today we went to the YMCA to do fitness tests with our good friend Mary!
”We did ‘get up and go’s’” said Party Jalapeño. This test involves standing up from a chair and walking quickly around a cone and back to sitting, trying to beat your last time. Best Exerciser also enjoyed this exercise.
‘Derek at Work’ said he enjoyed the Chair Stands, where members see how many chair squats they can complete in 30 seconds.
”I was fast!” said Fastwalker.
We are grateful for our community partners for sharing their skills with us, allowing us to build diversity in our programs. If you have a skill or activity you would like to share, we would love to hear about it!
Today we hopped a bus and headed over to CrossFit Iron Industry, also known as “JoshFit,” for another newband exciting workout.
Its summer break, so we had a bunch of new faces to introduce to Josh. As soon as we walked in the door, everyone was ready to see what was in store.
We warmed up with calisthenics (“cow-aesthetics”) before jumping into obstacle courses. We jumped, rolled, and carried weighted balls in relay races.
“ I was up on the bar off the ground.” 1Adam63 exclaimed about jumping over the parallettes.
“I liked doing the squats and the rolling on the mats” said Mr. Seahawk.
”I really like playing that game,” Dancing Jalapeño said about our next activity, Tic-Tac-Toe relay race with weighted balls.
We finished up with an all-time favorite, shootin hoops.
Today for Healthy Lifestyles we went out to CrossFit Iron Industry to exercise with our old friend Josh! He had us running and rolling, jumping and jogging. We carried around the exercise balls, rode on the stationary bike, and did some exercises that limbered us up. Then we played tic-tac-toe with the heavy exercise balls. We tried doing some bear crawls and then finished our time at the gym with some basketball. “I had a good day, good exercising... I can ride the bike...” said Dancing Queen, who also excelled at bear crawls. “We did some running, and there was hip-hop, and skipping. We did work out,” said Mr. Jazz. Everyone worked really hard! We can’t wait to go back! Thanks Josh!
Today for Healthy Lifestyles, we ventured out to CrossFit Iron Industry to work out with our friend Josh! We came back feeling super strong! When we were there, Josh had us do relay races with medicine balls, running and rolling drills, stationary biking, and maybe most importantly, stretches! Afterward we played basketball for the rest of our time at the gym. A lot of great shots went in. What was your favorite part? “The bicycle!” said Bicycle Bob. “I liked shooting the basketball into the hoop,” shared BestFit. “The bicycle and the basketball,” said Michael Jordan. “Rolling,” said Puzzle Master. “I’m really good at jumping,” said A Princess. Thanks again, Josh! What an awesome day!
Today for Healthy Lifestyles, we made our first venture of the year out to the Lakeway Garden! We went out there to prep the soil in our garden plot for the planting we’ll be doing soon. We stretched out our backs before rootin around in the dirt, removing rocks and weeds and tilling. “It is so hot,” said Party Jalapeño, pointing out that the weather was definitely on the warm side. Because of that, we decided to have a picnic out there! “It was dirty and messy,” observed Blueberry, who I think was talking about the gardening and not lunch. “We could put some roses...” said Sunflower Woman, which is true, though I think the idea was to focus more on vegetables in what we plant. “I am good at scooping the rocks and the weeds and I feel good now and I did eat lunch, and... yeah!” shared Munchkin. So far so good at the garden, and we’ll be back again soon!
